Orthodontic Assistant Course

This course is designed to provide allied oral health personnel with the knowledge and skills required to function successfully in an orthodontic practice.

Self-study manuals will be sent to you in advance to allow approximately 10 weeks for review of material.  There will be 3 weekends of labs in Regina (one weekend each in September, October and November).  To complete the course, you will be required to complete in-office practical assignments under supervision of a licensed practitioner by May 11, 2018.

 Registration will be available June 1, 2017

Applications will be accepted on a first come basis upon receipt of payment.

No early registrations will be accepted.

A copy of your SDAA or SDHA licence must accompany your registration.

Entrance Requirements:

  • Applicants must be licensed as a “Full Practicing Dental Assistant” or current license in Dental Therapy, or Dental Hygiene.
  • Applicants must have access to an orthodontic office in order to complete the practical assignments.

Tuition:          $1,595 (includes manual)   Minimum enrollment 14, maximum 20.

Students are required to supply uniform, lab coat, clinic shoes, safety glasses and specified orthodontic instruments and supplies.  Learning materials will be mailed out on July 14, 2017.

Course Overview

 Through self-study, lecture, laboratory / clinical sessions and in-office assignments, students will acquire the theoretical knowledge and the clinical skills for an orthodontic assistant.

 The course content includes the following clinical skill:

 Take cephalometric radiographs and locate anatomical land marks for cephalometric tracings

  • Fabricate study models (as taught in dental assistant training)
  • Expose intra oral and facial photographs
  • Place and remove separators
  • Select, fit and remove bands
  • Cement bands
  • Place bonded brackets and attachments
  • Place and remove archwires, ligature ties and accessories such as springs and elastics
  • Remove brackets, bands & attachments from teeth using hand instruments
  • Remove supragingival bulk cement from teeth by use of hand and ultrasonic scaler.
  • Remove excess bonding resin from teeth by use of band removing pliers, low speed hand-piece/discs and hand scaler.
  • Place removable orthodontic appliances
  • Provide client education
